Remember - retirement speeches must engage the whole audience.

And this normally includes younger co-workers as well as those in late career.

So when you are preparing for a farewell speech - either as the retiree yourself or as the person delivering the farewell, you'll need to engage both audiences.

But in either event, here are the five golden rules :

  • keep it short
  • engage the whole audience
  • recall early memories
  • recall team successes
  • what you'll miss; what the future holds

(a) Retirement Speeches - if you're the retiree

Once you have an understanding of the five golden rules, you'll need to bring your own personality to bear.

Here are some ideas for the five pillars of a successful retirement:

  1. mention your health - in particular how you're going to remain healthy.  Mention both a physical activity and mental activity - e.g. walking and sudoku
  2. mention family & friends - e.g. why you'll always be near a regional airport (so family and friends can visit easily)
  3. explain where exactly you intend to retire
  4. extra income - everyone needs extra income, so talk about converting a hobby into a "profitable hobby"
  5. maintaining your zest for living - mention that you're considering buying a small sailboat - one that you and your spouse can tow behind your auto.

author Professor Kenneth S. Shultz

"Retirement - the Psychology of Reinvention" answers many not-so-obvious questions - whatever your age or circumstances - and provides strategies for your next life chapter.

(b) Retirement Speeches - when you're giving the farewell to a retiring work colleague

The five golden rules for farewell speeches to a work colleague also apply to you ...

You will probably be speaking first, so here are a few ideas for personal content (about the retiree):

  • their health - mention that our life expectancy is now reaching out into our 90s
  • family and friends - give them some radical advice (such as teaching their grandchildren how to ride a uni cycle)
  • best place to retire - give them a suggestion (based on your knowledge of them)
  • extra income - suggest they buy a small business (perhaps a laundromat)
  • their zest for living - suggest they buy a small sailboat

Finally, it's good to remember that an up-to-the-moment retirement speach will have its focus on reinvention, and liberally sprinkled with words for retirement - as written on farewell cards.

And here is a reference how to blend into your various retirement speaches the concept of the Five Pillars of a Successful Retirement.
